That’s a great question. I agree, we can’t be learning 100% of the time. We need rest. “Deep work” requires intense periods of learning followed by intense rest periods.

“Rest” can be difficult to define — for some people, watching TV and silly videos might even be relaxing and helpful. I would ask questions about the type of recovery — is it refilling your energy? Is it getting you back on track so you can produce more excellent work?

Many times, things like TV and social media don’t help recovery. But if your form of recovery helps reenergize you to produce more top-quality work, then that’s a step in the right direction.
